In the journey of a puppy’s life, the role of a mother is invaluable, offering comfort and care that helps them grow into robust and delightful companions. However, not every puppy gets to experience this warm embrace, as seen with a little pup named Moonshine.
Moonshine, an adorable four-week-old puppy, faced the harsh reality of being rejected by her mother because she was born with a deformity that hindered her ability to walk. Her story took a hopeful turn when she was taken in by Bosley’s Place Inc., a rescue center in Smyrna, Georgia, dedicated to caring for orphaned newborn puppies.

Rescuers at the center were determined to provide Moonshine with the care she needed for a happier future. Moonshine was diagnosed with swimmer syndrome, a rare condition in newborn puppies that causes their front legs to splay out and impacts lung development due to a flattened rib cage.
Seeking specialized care, the rescue center connected with Beth, an experienced foster parent familiar with treating puppies with swimmer syndrome, who welcomed Moonshine into her home near Atlanta, Georgia. In her new foster home, Moonshine was surrounded by love from Beth and her family, including their own dogs, who accepted her as one of their own. It was here that Moonshine began to feel truly cherished and secure.

Beth assessed Moonshine’s condition and designed a treatment plan focused on her front legs, as her back legs were in good shape. According to a Facebook update from Bosley’s Place Inc., “For now we’re going to focus on her two front legs and more prevention to help alleviate and heal her flat rib cage to provide some relief for her lungs.”
To support her recovery, Beth taped Moonshine’s front legs in place, preventing her from lying flat on her chest. This technique was aimed at helping her legs stay underneath her body, and it marked the start of Moonshine’s transformation. Her foster family eagerly anticipated her progress.
With constant encouragement and affection, particularly from Beth’s daughters who adored her, Moonshine hardly noticed the tape on her legs. Gradually, she began walking properly, wagging her tail with delight, and enjoying playtime with the girls.

Moonshine’s journey delighted both her foster family and the rescuers when she finally started to run. “Moonshine is UNSTOPPABLE! Even her chest is rounding out slightly. We are so unbelievably proud of this little fluffy nugget of love,” Bosley’s Place Inc. shared in another Facebook post.
Living with her foster family and furry siblings, Moonshine’s happiness was evident in her bright eyes and joyful demeanor. She brought joy and warmth into her foster home, capturing the hearts of Beth’s family.

Recognizing the joy she had brought into their lives, Beth and her husband decided to officially make Moonshine a permanent member of their family. They surprised their older daughter, Jane, on her birthday with the news that Moonshine, now renamed Sage, would be staying with them forever.
The family, now complete with their beloved puppy Sage, could not be happier. Sage, in turn, feels like the luckiest dog in the world, living her dream life surrounded by those who love her dearly.
