Scout Starts Howling
As Mandy was going over everything in her head, Scout let out a howl in another room of the house. At first, it startled her. Then, she thought, there was that. Scout had never acted like this before. He didn’t just bark at random corners of the wall in their old apartment. He’d never even howled before now. Mandy set the stove on low and turned to check on Scout.
He’d been on edge all day, and now, she realized, so was she. Right after Mandy turned and started to walk away from the stove, the smell hit her.
