It’s always heartwarming when a dog in a shelter finally meets their forever family. However, it can be heartbreaking to see dogs waiting for adoption, especially when their companions find homes while they remain behind.
This was the case for Chauncey, a sweet yet shy dog residing at the Spartanburg Humane Society. Chauncey spent her days observing other dogs leave with new families through a peephole in the door, as she remained waiting for her own chance.

The staff at the shelter, puzzled over why Chauncey wasn’t getting adopted, were determined to keep her spirits up. According to Angel Cox, CEO of the Spartanburg Humane Society, Chauncey would often retreat into her shell amidst the noise and bustle of the shelter. However, they took special care of her by taking her on walks, petting her, and showering her with treats.
“She loved being walked and held by both the staff and the volunteers,” remarked Cox to The Dodo, emphasizing how Chauncey’s gentle nature made her a volunteer favorite.
When it seemed like she might never find a home, a family did decide to adopt her. Chauncey experienced the joy of a home, albeit briefly, as she was soon returned to the shelter.

Yet, this setback did not deter the Spartanburg staff. They remained hopeful and posted about Chauncey on Facebook, hoping to find her the perfect match. This effort paid off when another family, moved by her story, chose to adopt her.
This time, Chauncey melted her new family’s hearts immediately with her warm personality. Cox shared, “She won them over with her sweetness and love.”
The team at the shelter was ecstatic when Chauncey finally found her permanent, loving home. Her journey is an inspiring reminder to prospective adopters not to overlook quieter dogs, as they too can bring endless joy to a family.
