Despite countless rescue missions under her belt, Donna Lochmann never hesitates to help an animal in distress, responding to every call she receives. This commitment is especially crucial during extreme weather conditions—be it summer’s scorching heat or winter’s freezing cold. Animals left outside face dire challenges, particularly during harsh winters.
So, when Donna received a call about a little pup struggling in the icy outdoors, she quickly geared up, teamed with a rescue partner, and headed out to help. A concerned neighbor had alerted Donna about a tiny white dog spending weeks hopping between porches in a frigid neighborhood.
Capturing the pup turned into a daunting task. Donna and her colleague spent two hours navigating snowy streets to locate the elusive dog. Despite their best efforts, the pup remained distrustful and evaded capture.
The breakthrough came when they managed to gently corner the pup on a porch, minimizing her escape options. Still wary, the pup growled as Donna tried to approach. Luckily, Donna was well-prepared for resistance. She offered some tasty treats, signaling her intentions were friendly.
After spending some time with the pup on the porch, Donna used her coat to pick up the feisty little dog and transported her to safety. The weeks spent in the freezing St. Louis weather had taken a toll—the pup was cold, wet, and covered in mats.
However, relief was on the way at the Stray Rescue of St. Louis shelter. There, the pup received a warm bath and a much-needed haircut, transforming into an entirely new dog. Named Joanie January, the once scruffy pup emerged radiant and ready for a new chapter.
Finding Joanie a caring foster home happened swiftly. Ally Turner welcomed Joanie into her home with open arms. Their bond was immediate and heartwarming—a testament to second chances and new beginnings.
“This girl is a bit shy/timid but is sooo sweet!” Turner shared on Facebook. “She’s already my little shadow, wanting to be held and following me around. She’s doing some exploring around the apartment, and her introduction with Emmy went well! Emmy was excited to meet her, and Joanie didn’t pay her any mind, haha.”
Now, Joanie is secure and content, with a cozy couch and a loving human to care for her. Her days of braving the cold are behind her, and her future looks incredibly bright as she continues her transformation in a nurturing home.
