27. The Forbidden Land
She paused at the entrance, sniffing the air, before disappearing through the gates. Tommy hesitated. He knew he shouldn’t go into the cemetery at night, especially not alone.
But he also knew he couldn’t let Snarf out of his sight. He crept closer to the gates, peering through the bars.
He could just make out Snarf’s silhouette in the moonlight, wandering among the headstones. Tommy’s heart sank. He couldn’t follow her any further.
28. Turning Back
With a heavy heart, Tommy turned and began to make his way back home. He retraced his steps through the town, his mind still racing with thoughts of how to help his family.
When he finally reached his house, he looked up at his window, the bedsheet rope still hanging down. With a deep breath, he began to climb.
Each pull was a struggle, his arms and legs aching from the effort.
