The LaPerm got its name because of its tight, curly fur coat that makes it unique in appearance. It comes in many different patterns and colors, and the cat costs $300 to $600 from a quality breeder. The LaPerm originated in the U.S. in the early 1980s, a time when big, curly hair was a fad.
But, the LaPerm’s coat wasn’t intentional. It actually came from a spontaneous mutation of cats that were bred for pest control. The breed’s accidental founders were the Koehls from Oregon, whose housecat, Speedy, gave birth to an unusually-curly coated kitten. The Koehls named the kitten Curly, and it is from Curly that all LaPerms descend.
