There are two reasons why cats scratch surfaces: One is because they are sharpening their claws. Another reason is that they’re using their paws to deposit their scents. Since their paws have scent glands, rubbing them along objects deposits their scent there.

If your cat has a habit of scratching pieces of furniture, it may be because this is an area that has many scents. Therefore, they are replacing these foreign scents with their own. If this is becoming a problem, then it is important to have scratching posts.
