Kittens first learn to knead on their mother’s bellies as a sign that they’re hungry. Even when they’re weaned and away from their mothers, they continue to do this as a sign of affection and as a destressor.

To do it on a human is usually a signal that they’re ready to chill out and are preparing their favorite spot, which is often alongside their owner.
