Every dog in a shelter dreams of finding the perfect family or at least a warm foster home to await their forever companions. Unfortunately, many spend years confined to small spaces at shelters. Sky, a deaf Dogo Argentino, faced such a fate until she met her remarkable foster mom, Elli.
Sky’s early life was challenging. For the first 18 months, she was kept in a small crate and eventually surrendered to a shelter alongside her sister. The shelter environment worsened her condition, especially due to her deafness.

Elli, who shared Sky’s story on Instagram, noted, “SKY is living in a shelter and needs out immediately. She is deteriorating.” Although Elli already had three adult dogs and had paused fostering, she couldn’t ignore Sky’s plight. Moved by her story, Elli decided to foster Sky, reminded of her own deaf dog, Jasmyne.
Elli took Sky to her dog farm in upstate New York to start anew. However, Sky’s arrival came with a challenge. Jasmyne, her other deaf dog, showed strong reactions to other dogs, necessitating separate living arrangements for Sky. Sky now resides in a barn converted into a guest house, allowing her to have her own space while being under Elli’s care.

Elli spends about eight hours daily with Sky, helping her learn obedience, social skills, and sign language. Elli mentioned, “She’s resilient and settles, quietly waiting for me to return throughout the day, into the evening and each morning.”
Despite spending nights alone, Sky is content, often found sleeping in unusual positions, a sign of her comfort and relaxation in her new environment. She enjoys activities like hiking and visiting ponds, proving herself to be friendly with both humans and other animals.
Elli proudly shared, “SKY is great with humans of all sizes and ages, knows sign language cues, and is comfortable around other friendly, approachable dogs.” Sky’s progress suggests it’s just a matter of time before she finds her forever family. Elli is confident that Sky will make a wonderful companion, and hopefully, her ideal family is not far off.
