Furby’s story is one of resilience and triumph against the odds. Born as a Goldendoodle puppy, his early days were not as joyful as they should have been. Instead of exploring and playing, Furby had to endure numerous medical challenges that left him frail and dispirited.
Despite his struggles, Furby showed an incredible spirit. Even on his toughest days, he fought to overcome his difficulties, demonstrating a determination to achieve the happy life he deserved. Recognizing his potential, the caring staff at Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) provided unwavering support to help him on his journey.

At the Austin shelter, it was discovered that Furby was the smallest and most vulnerable of his litter. Unlike his healthy siblings, Furby faced a significant issue with his nerves, which made him unable to walk or sit up independently. Nevertheless, his indomitable will kept him trying, impressing everyone with his perseverance.
Luis Sanchez, APA!’s director of public relations and communications, explained to The Dodo how the rising demand for designer breeds like Goldendoodles often results in puppies being bred with more focus on profit than health, leading to medical issues and more dogs ending up in shelters.
After numerous tests and treatments, Furby eventually reached the point where he could move in with a foster family—and what followed was remarkable. Surrounded by a loving foster family and other pets, Furby transformed dramatically. He began to run and play, finally experiencing the joyful puppyhood he had missed.

The puppy who once struggled to raise his head is now thriving, filling his caregivers with immense joy. “He is playing with his foster siblings and learning what love is,” shared Sanchez.
Furby’s story might have had a different ending without the dedication of the Austin shelter team and his foster family, who gave him another chance. Though he still has a future to build, there’s confidence that he will eventually find his perfect forever home.
This story highlights the consequences of irresponsible dog breeding, which prioritizes profit over the well-being of dogs. Often, this results in puppies with health problems or behavioral issues, especially among popular designer breeds like Goldendoodles. This practice contributes to overpopulation as these dogs are more frequently abandoned to shelters.
For prospective dog owners, it’s crucial to think carefully and support ethical breeding practices or consider adoption. This approach not only benefits our four-legged friends but also promotes a more compassionate and responsible choice in dog ownership.
