While on a walk through Connecticut’s Frank Niederwerfer Wildlife Sanctuary with his dog, a Good Samaritan heard unusual barking coming from the forest. Intrigued by the noise, he ventured into the woods and found a five-year-old dog abandoned and tied to a tree.
The Samaritan, noticing the dog’s gentle nature, decided to free him and took him to the Tyler Regional Animal Care Shelter (TRACS) in South Windsor. Although the dog’s collar bore the name Kobe, the shelter staff opted for a fresh start by renaming him Obie, hoping it would help him move past the trauma and begin a new chapter.
Now, Obie is on the lookout for a new family to love him as he deserves. The team at TRACS started sharing Obie’s photos on social media, hoping they would catch the eye of a future loving owner. Thanks to his charm, many people reached out to learn more about him, reassured that Obie was getting the care he needed.
A Facebook update from the shelter explained, “Kobe got a bath today, and as you can see he is starting to BEEF out! His eyes are almost healed, and he is learning manners and personal space. He is LOVING all the attention from every person that meets him. While he is still unsure of males, we think that will come with time.”
Obie’s health improved with medication that treated his eye and skin conditions. He underwent a comprehensive vet examination, received vaccines, was neutered, had blood work done, and got microchipped. With his health and spirits restored, the shelter announced that Obie was ready for adoption.
“Obie loves being loved on, and is learning so much from his weekly training sessions. Obie deserved to be the focus of attention and we are hopeful we can find the PERFECT home,” shared the shelter in another post. They noted that while Obie is still wary around men and prefers a female-only home, he is eager to learn new things, despite some anxiety and needing more practice on a leash.

In related news, the South Windsor Police Department revealed that Obie’s former owner, a 26-year-old woman, surrendered herself and was subsequently arrested. She faced charges of animal cruelty and tethering a dog to a fixed object, and was released on a $5,000 bond. Her court appearance is scheduled in the coming weeks.
