In Lawrenceville, Georgia, rescuers received a distressing call from the local animal shelter about a dog found abandoned in a dumpster. The dog, named Scout, was in a heartbreaking state. When a rescuer from the Society of Humane Friends of Georgia arrived, they found Scout—thought to be a Doodle breed—emaciated, filthy, tangled with matted fur, and covered in fleas. He was so weak that lifting his head seemed an impossible task. Despite the overwhelming emotions, the rescuers sprang into action.
Sensitive to Scout’s dire condition, they hurried him to the University of Georgia Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Athens. The veterinary team was equally shocked and began immediate, critical treatment. However, despite their care, Scout’s condition remained precarious. Understanding the long, challenging road ahead for his recovery, the rescuers sought financial help through social media.
The online community responded generously, donating funds to ensure Scout received the specialized care he needed. This outpouring of support marked a turning point in Scout’s journey, bringing immense joy to the rescue team and hospital staff. Just two days later, Scout, aided by a wheelchair, managed to stand on all four legs, a remarkable victory celebrated by all.

The best news was that Scout would soon leave the hospital. After ten challenging days, he was released to a foster home, welcomed with open arms by a loving family ready to support his continued recovery. “The critical care team at UGA has been fabulous as always and they are Scout’s biggest fans,” they stated in an August 5 update.
Scout’s new life in foster care began on a hopeful note. His foster mother shared updates, celebrating his remarkable progress and determination to regain his strength. “What an incredible transformation from the dog who couldn’t even lift his head the day we met him. He still has a ways to go but he is definitely a miracle in the making,” she noted in her latest video.
